Naoki Sugiyama

Naoki Sugiyama, born in 1961 in Japan, demonstrated his musical versatility from an early age, studying piano, violin, bassoon, trombone, music theory, and composition. From 1985 to 1987, he pursued further musical studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. During this time, he also received private conducting instruction from Professor Herbert Kegel, General Music Director of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1991, he founded the Japanese-German Philharmonic Society to promote musical exchange and collaboration between Japan and Germany. He conducted numerous concerts and opera performances, and worked as an assistant to Professor Kurt Redel. From 1994 to 1997, he served as a faculty member at Takasaki Music University in Japan. Between 2000 and 2002, Sugiyama was a regular guest conductor of the Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra in Budapest, Hungary. His repertoire included Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives, Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (with Josef Lendvay as soloist), among many other works, performed at the Vigadó and other prominent concert halls in Budapest. From 2002 to 2007, he appeared regularly as a guest conductor with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in the Czech Republic. His programs included major symphonic works such as Bruckner’s Symphonies No. 3, 5, and 6, Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, and other important repertoire. Since 2007, he has conducted the Classic FM Radio Orchestra in Bulgaria, the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra in Lithuania, and various youth orchestras across Europe and Asia. Between 2002 and 2008, Sugiyama conducted several opera productions in Japan, including Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, and the Japanese premiere of Peter Cornelius’s The Barber of Bagdad at the National Theatre in Tokyo and other major venues. He has also led numerous conducting masterclasses in Japan, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Austria.
